John and Ruth Numan began market gardening on 50 acres of land in Millgrove, Ontario in 1972. In 1973, they built their first greenhouse to start early field crops and bedding plants.

By 1979, Ruth and John had expanded their land to include 6 greenhouses. They proceeded to buy a farm near Kincardine and build 12 more greenhouses. In 1984, the family decided to move to Kitchener due to poor growing conditions caused by harsh winters in Kincardine. The two bought a farm in Wilmot Township and Westwood Greenhouses was born. The family put up 12 more greenhouses there and had found time to add six children along the way.

Over the course of 20 years Ruth and John increased the size of the operation from 24,000 sq. ft. to 100,000 sq. ft.. Their customers consisted of grocery stores and Home Hardware stores. In 1992, they started selling retail in Kitchener/Waterloo with three locations located on Victoria St. in Princess Auto Mall, Westmount Rd. at the Westmount plaza and Ottawa St. in the Alpine Centre. They also started selling retail on the homestead. The retail was such a big hit because Westwood was know for quality, a wide selection of plants, and unique varieties that many garden centres did not carry.

In 2003, they bought a property in Mannheim because over half of the children wanted to stay in the bedding plant industry and so more space was needed. The decision to go ahead with the new project was made.

In July 2004 construction began on the new 100,000 sq. ft. greenhouse. 40,000 sq. ft. is being used for retail and the balance to be used for growing the plants to be sold. The retail area opened for business in April 2005 while the growing area was finished during the fall of 2005. The new location was named Colour Paradise Greenhouses. Westwood continues to grow and sell to their wholesale customers. Colour Paradise Greenhouses will be open from April through December of each year offering an amazing selection of annuals, perennials, shrubs, mums, poinsettias, tropicals, plus many new and unique varieties.
