The Athyrium cultivars are wonderful ferns for the shade garden. The textures combine nicely with other shade garden favourites such as hosta and bergenia. The new cultivars are very tolerant of garden soils. Athyrium niponicum pictum, or Japanese Painted Fern is famous for its arching fronds in silvery-grey, accented by wine-red stems and veins. Prefers a moist humus-rich soil. Perennial of the Year 2004.
