Move over Trillium, when I walk the spring wood, I look for Mertensia, its stalks of loose clusters of sky blue bell-shaped flowers hanging over the powdery blue-green leaves. A lovely sight. And they do well in the spring shade garden, often slowly reseeding so you have more to enjoy next year. Virginia Bluebells usually goes dormant into summer, leaving room for other shade plants to fill in the rest of the year.
