If you have a moist, shady part of the garden, ferns are a lovely way to stray from hosta. There are many types of ferns, changes in frond size, shape which of couurse will affect the feel of the garden. Osmunda 'Royal Fern' has a unique form and texture as the leathery green fronds form graceful vase-shaped plants. The fern sends up stalks in the centre that hold the spores rather than the underside of the fronds. Best success in acidic moist soil.
