Long considered the queens of the shady border, fluffy Astilbe plumes are a welcome sight in the summer garden. There are many new cultivars which deliver a range of plant heights, foliage types, flower colours. Fanal though has been popular for decades for its bronzy red foliage in the spring which becomes green for summer, and the strong maroon-red flower spikes. Astilbe grows best in sun to part sun but will tolerate full sun with plenty of soil moisture.
