If you don't like the soldierly look of Karl Foerster Calamagrostis, and you haven't found a Miscanthus to tickle your fancy, then perhaps it is time to look at Panicum. Panicum has a nicely airy look to the seedheads (perhaps you played hen or rooster with them as a child?). This airiness is a very different texture than other grass genera. 'Shenandoah' is the best Switch Grass for foliage colour. Leaves are green late spring-early summer, dark-red tips by July and completely wine-coloured by September. Flower panicles emerge red and mature to silvery-grey.
